It’s time to take a deep breath, share a meal, get to know one another, and TalkAbout it!

TalkAbouts are our opportunity to meet and discuss what The New School is all about, the ideas behind what we do here, how it works, and our perceptions and reactions to the wonders of it all.

You are cordially invited to attend our annual Potluck Supper and TalkAbout on Tuesday 28 September at 7:00 PM at The Newark New Century Club at the corner of Haines Street and Delaware Avenue in downtown Newark. (Directions are enclosed.)

Everyone is invited. Please call Bethani Wallace or Melanie to discuss what you might bring. See you there! : )

Parents & TNS

For many parents, The New School is a startling experience. Not only is their child’s education now vastly different, but compared to traditional settings, they have an unusual relationship to the school. One of the best ways to become more familiar with The New School is to take advantage of the opportunities provided for self-edification and socializing. The Parents’ HandBook details the relationship of the parent to the school and explains the ways in which parents can become invovled in the school, among them the Sketti Dinners, Seminars, Thesis Review Committees and TalkAbouts. If you have not yet received your copy, or have any questions or suggestions regarding the HandBook, please contact Melanie.

WishList

There are always a few things that would be nice to have, especcially if soeone else has them lying around gathering dust or an extra one and which we could put to good use. Here are a few of our current wishes: Chairs We could always use a few extra chairs. Those which are sturdy but easily moveable are best. Darkroom Equipment Trays, timers, paper, etc. Great Books of the Western World with the "Syntopicon" published by The Encyclopedia Britannica. Professional Potter’s Wheel, either electric or kick wheel. Okay, okay, you proably don’t have one of these just lying around, but if you hear of one, let us know. :)

If you would be interested in joining eTalkAbout, drop a line to info@TheNewSchool.com with your name and e-mail address. An on-line invitation will be sent to you to get you started. eTalkAbout is a discussion group open only to members of the School Assembly -- which includes students, staff, parents of enrolled students, graduates, and non-voting members of School Assembly. eTalkAbout is a great way to share information with other families in the School, to air questions, and to keep current on happenings at School. It is a great reference to have just a click away when making plans. If you are on the internet, you should be on eTalkAbout.

SEMINAR

Twice each month, The New School hosts an evening seminar. Conversation is one of the primary means through which people learn at The New School. Some conversations are casual, some intensely personal, and some are lively exchanges of ideas on the most fundamental concerns of human existence. Once about every two weeks from 8:30 to 10:30 PM, every one is invited to take part in the third kind of conversation. The conversation is begun by considering an opening question based on a brief reading selection (less than 50 pages) from ancient or modern original sources. To date we have discussed Plato’s “Ion," Chapter One of “The Sane Society” by Erich Fromm, Sophocles’ play “Antigone”, the poetry of Seamus Heaney , the Declaration of Independence, and An Introduction to Chaos Theory among others. Seminar is the parents’ opportunity to engage with students in the kind of thinking and discussion the students have the opportunity to practice every day. The Seminars are held on the first Tuesday and third Wednesday of every month. The readings are announced through eTalkAbout. There is no fee, and all are welcome.

Several students have expressed their intention of graduating this year. The process requires them to write a thesis on any topic of their choice, prepare a presentation, and make an oral defense of their competence to graduate. As part of the process, they must meet with a committee of volunteers, the Thesis Review Committee, who review their paper and help them prepare for their defense. We are looking for volunteers to serve on Thesis Review Committees. Parents who have served before have commented on how being a member of a Review Committee was one of the best ways to really come to understand the school and its effect on students. If you have volunteered in the past and would like to serve again, or if you have never been on a committee before and would like to be a part of this illuminating process, please contact the School Meeting Recording Secretary, Laura Cochran.

Place an Add or Info to Share

If you have an announcement you would like to make to the school community or an item or service to sell, let Melanie know by the 1st of the month and we will be glad to include it in the FYI.
